The Heart of the Man
— Al Hallonquist
Growing up with the X-15 program as a child, Scott Crossfield was the first test pilot I was exposed to. Growing up to be an Aerospace Historian, I learned about so many more, but you always remember your first.
I had the honor of meeting and spending time with Scotty over the years but the true insight into his heart came a few years ago. Bob White is a dear friend, and a former fellow X-15 jock with Scotty. One day Bob and I were chatting and I in great frustration asked Bob: "Why on earth aren't you in the National Aviation Hall of Fame?" Soon as I said it I realized I was being less than polite but doggone it! A valid question! He just said he didn't know why.
So I embarked on a journey, and that was to do what I could do to get him in. I rewrote his nomination, and made it a full multi media presentation. I nominated him for and got him into the Florida Aviation Hall of Fame, etc etc etc.
Then one day I suggested we go to the Sun n Fun Fly In in Lakeland, Florida. I had a plan which I didn't share with Bob, as he was already embarrassed by my efforts as he truly is devoid of ego.
My plan was, to meet up with Scotty and solicit his advice. Scotty attended every year and I had enough contacts there to track him down. I had no idea Bob had gotten Scotty's cell number and already made arrangements to meet up with him until he said he was going to call him. Perfect!
We met up and I and a couple of my friends who were there, sat back as these two friends renewed their friendship of many years. What a joy to see the 2 of them animated and truly thrilled to see each other! Finally I thought it time to broach the subject, and got "the stare" from the General (Bob) as he just knew what I was going to do. But, hey.
I mentioned to Scotty I was in the process of renominating and "campaigning" for Bob's entry into the NAHF, and did he have any suggestions of what I could do further? He nodded then abruptly lifted his head, mouth agape. He turned to Bob and said "What? You're not in? Bob, I'm sorry I just assumed....."
He then turned back to me and said please send me what you have overnight mail. I did, and the very next election Bob was inducted.
I've no idea why he hadn't been in before, but one thing I did know. Don't get in Scotty's way, as he immediately rectified a situation.
Arguably the greatest test pilot ever, his measure of heart exceeds anyone's I know.
Godspeed Scotty. I'll add a photo of them together later.
